Our club was formed in July 1931, and became an Incorporated Body in November 1990. For more than 90 years our club has been bringing together people who share an interest in stamps, postal history, covers postcards and related collectibles. Whether you collect a single country, a theme, postmarks, or just enjoy learning more about philately, you’ll find a friendly and supportive community here. It has served the stamp-collecting community in Geelong and the surrounding region.
Prior to that, in early August 1937, the Geelong Philatelic Society organized a fundraiser for the Geelong Free Kindergarten whereby approximately 600 covers were carried by P.J. Pratt in his glider, towed by Mr K. Farmer, to Essendon airport, in what is claimed to be the first towed flight of its kind in Australia.
We have been privileged to host several State-wide Stamp Exhibitions, starting with our 21st Birthday bash at the Geelong Town Hall in May 1952.
On our 80th birthday in 2011 we hosted Geepex80 at the Geelong West Town Hall.
We don’t claim to be the oldest, or the biggest, or even the best stamp club in Victoria. But we try our hardest to make you feel welcome and feel like you’re part of a community. Among our members we have serious philatelists with a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips – we also have members who just enjoy collecting stamps; be it thematic, single country, or all world. We even have members who don’t actually collect stamps, just the postmarkings on them! Some collect covers or postcards, and some collect ‘Cinderellas’ or labels of many different kinds. Philately is a very broad church!
Our Saturday evening meetings are formal, but we try to get the boring bits over and done with quickly. Then we get down to the fun of perusing circuit sheets in the hopes of adding to our collections. We have sheets prepared by our members, and also a number of circuit books, belonging to Brighton Philatelic Society, available. This provides the opportunity to pick up good quality items for a fraction of the catalogue value. We sometimes have a guest speaker, or one of our members will present a display. At the end of each meeting there is the opportunity for a cuppa and a chat.
